Studeo Forensics offers Certified Computer Examination and Computer Forensic Consulting
Computer forensics (aka digital forensics) is a type of forensic science pertaining to legal evidence found in computers and digital storage media. Digital forensics in civil litigation is a growing requirement by the courts to assure that evidence is properly preserved and presented in court. Forensic collections, data extraction, data carving and forensic reports are all part of this growing field. Our goal is to bridge the gap between digital forensics and eDiscovery consulting. Studeo Legal offers a full range of forensic services for any size law firm or company and will generate the necessary reports to ensure a forensically sound and legally defensible data collection.
Our on-staff Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) ® been awarded certification after completion of one of the most difficult and rigorous program in the digital forensics industry, The International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners. The CCE testing process is designed to test an applicant’s proficiency in digital forensics, through a rigorous, multipart examination which includes the guidelines for creating a defensible forensic collection.
What is Computer Forensics?
Computer forensics is a branch of digital forensic science pertaining to legal evidence found in computers and digital storage media. The goal of computer forensics is to examine digital media in a forensically sound manner with the aim of identifying, preserving, extracting, recovering, analyzing and presenting facts and opinions about the information. The purpose of computer forensics techniques is to search, preserve and analyze information on computer systems to find potential evidence for a trial.
CCEs testify in court as to the collection methods used, they verify that everything was collected, and they explain any issues or anomalies in the data if there were any. The process of identifying, gathering, and cloning the data is called “forensic imaging”. When the CCE is “forensically imaging” a data storage device, they are basically taking a snapshot of the data in its entirety and in its current configuration to preserve it for analysis. Part of this snapshot will include the unused space on your computer. This unused space may appear to be nothing of importance, but after analysis, a CCE may show that it houses deleted files that were never overwritten. However, the essential goal of computer forensics is the analysis of data and metadata which summarizes computer usage and human interaction with the technology.
